The advancing studies MA “Cultural Educational Projects in Schools“ is a unique program in Germany and was launched at Marburg’s Philipps University by winter semester 2014/15. The course of studies adresses teachers, artists, cultural practitioners, who aim at extra-occupationally winning additional qualifications in the context of cultural education in schools.

The Faculty of Education at Philipps University Marburg reacts with this advanced academic training program to current needs in educational policy, supported by ALTANA Cultural Foundation. All over Germany, the number of schools increase which aim at enforcing their efforts in cultural education. Students at Advancing Qualification MA gain a longed-for competence in leadership in the field of cultural education in schools. They acquire an academically qualified degree which focusses on applicability allowing them to encourage, establish, escort and sustainably anchor cultural educational- as well as research-processes.

Students academically and practically learn to manage liaisons between cultural institutions and schools; they are pushed towards artistic processes and establish strategies to connect a school’s development and cultural management. At the core of this, the effects music, dance, visual art, theatre, and other aesthetic fields cause on spaces of learning and experience have to be fundamentally anchored in the schools pedagogical practice. The MA is executed by the Institute of Pedagogy in Schools and the Insitute of Sports and Motology and takes an extra-occupational course of studies over two years. It demands 28 days of presence which will be held as seminar-, studio-, and project-days – primarily on weekends or en-bloque.

The MA program is a cooperation of Philipps University Marburg’s Faculty of Education and ALTANA Cultural Foundation. The program merges the universities expertise in educating teachers, research and escorting processes with ALTANA Cultural Foundation’s long term in-field experience in transdisciplinary collaboration with different fields of arts and its cultural management of KulturTagJahr – a project held at schools in Frankfurt which aims at connecting students to different aesthetic disciplines. Due to that, the course of studies is held by highly recognized scholars, experienced practitioners, and internationally well established artists. Susanne Klatten, founder and associate of ALTANA Cultural Foundation, is the patron of the new MA.

This Advancing Qualification course of studies will constantly develop itself further in the context of WM3, a project which aims at creating synergies in middle-hessian Advancing Qualification programs. WM3 Advancing Qualification Central-Hessia (www.wmhoch3.de) is one of 26 innovative projects, which was selected in a federal competition (“Advance through Education: Open Universities“) and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the European Union’s European Social Fund. Additionaly, the course of studies is supported by Commerzbank Foundation.
